Janet Jackson Looks Back at Infamous 2004 Super Bowl Performance, Reveals Where She Stands with Justin Timberlake

Janet Jackson is addressing her infamous 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance with Justin Timberlake.

In her A&E and Lifetime docuseries, Janet, the 55-year-old entertainer opened up about the performance and set the record straight on where she stands with Justin, 40, almost 18 years after the incident.

“Honestly, this whole thing was blown way out of proportion,” Janet explained. “And, of course, it was an accident that should not have happened, but everyone is looking for someone to blame and that’s got to stop.”

For those who don’t remember, Janet and Justin were performing “Rock Your Body” during the Halftime Show when he accidentally exposed her breast for approximately 140 million people to see.

Janet went on to say that she and Justin are close friends today, and that they put that incident behind them a long time ago.

“Justin and I are very good friends, and we will always be very good friends,” Janet said. “We spoke just a few days ago. He and I have moved on, and it’s time for everyone else to do the same.”

After the situation aired live on TV, Justin‘s record sales spiked, while Janet was essentially blacklisted from the industry, with her music being removed from radio stations and TV channels.

Later in the documentary, Janet recalled to brother Randy Jackson that Justin asked her at the time if he should speak out publicly amid the backlash.

We talked once and [Justin] said, ‘I don’t know if I should come out and make a statement,’” Janet said. “And I said, ‘Listen, I don’t want any drama for you. They’re aiming all of this at me.’ So I said, ‘If I were you, I wouldn’t say anything.’”

After the release of The New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears in February 2021, many people called out Justin for the way he treated Britney Spears after their split, while also bringing up the Janet situation again.
