Taraji P. Henson to Star as Shug Avery in 'The Color Purple' Movie

Taraji P. Henson was just added to the cast of Warner Bros.’ upcoming film The Color Purple.

If you don’t know, the film is an adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical of the same name.

Taraji will be portraying the role of Shug Avery in the Blitz Bazawule adaptation, Variety reports.

Also in the cast of the film are Corey Hawkins in the role of Harpo and H.E.R. in the role of Squeak. The role of Celie, the starring role in the musical and movie, has yet to be announced. Stay tuned as more casting news is announced.

The original 1985 movie’s director Steven Spielberg and star Oprah Winfrey are among the producers of this new film.
