“I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value,” Snoop shared in a press release, via Complex.
Snoop originally signed with Death Row Records back in 1993, where he dropped his critically acclaim debut album Doggystyle. He later signed with No Limit Records, Interscope, Capitol, Geffen, Priority Records, and Def Jam.
“It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me,” Snoop continued. “I would like to personally thank the teams at Blackstone, MNRK and especially David Kestnbaum, who worked collaboratively with me over several months to make this exciting homecoming a reality. I’m looking forward to building the next chapter of Death Row Records.”
Death Row Records was founded back in 1992 by Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, the D.O.C., and Dick Griffey. After tons of lawsuits and criminal activity, the label filed for bankruptcy in 2006 and three years later it was auctioned off for $18 million to WIDEawake Entertainment. After changing hands several times, it was sold to Blackstone and MNRK, who have now sold the label to Snoop.
Shortly after the news broke, Kanye West took to social media to congratulate Snoop on his new business venture.
On Instagram, Kanye, 44, shared a screenshot of Currensy’s tweet that reads, “Snoop acquiring Deathrow is black future month As F–k.” He also added the hashtag, “#BlackFutureMonth.”
