The investigation is tied to allegations made in a Sunday Times article that a Saudi businessman, Mahfouz Marei Mubarak, was promised royal honors and British citizenship in exchange for donations by then-chief executive of the foundation and confidant to the royal, Michael Fawcett. He later resigned from the role in November.
The Metropolitan Police said the investigation started after the Special Enquiry Team “conducted the assessment process,” including contacting those believed to have relevant information.
A spokesperson for Prince Charles told Reuters that the royal had “no knowledge of the alleged offer of honors or British citizenship on the basis of donation to his charities.”
Prince Charles gave Mahfouz Marei Mubarak royal honors in a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace in November of 2016, according to the Sunday Times, but the event was not recorded on an official list keeping track of royal activities.
