Halle Berry Reflects on Her Historic Oscars Win 20 Years Later: 'I Will Never Get Over This Moment'

Halle Berry is looking back at a historic moment in her career.

In a post shared to her Twitter on Friday (March 25), the 55-year-old actress recalled winning Best Actress at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002 for her role in Monster’s Ball, which made her the first Black woman to win the award.

“20 years ago, this week, I walked through that door,” Halle wrote alongside a photo of her holding the award. “I will never get over this moment!”

She went on to thank The Academy, Lionsgate, Lee Daniels, and Marc Forster, adding a red heart emoji.

At the time, Halle was only the seventh African American woman to be nominated for the award and remains the only Black woman to have won. In Monster’s Ball, the actress played Leticia Musgrove, a woman who begins an affair with the executioner of her convicted husband. It also stars Heath Ledger, Billy Bob Thornton, Sean Combs, Peter Boyle, and Mos Def.

That year Halle was up against RenĂ©e Zellweger (Bridget Jones’s Diary), Judi Dench (Iris), Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge) and Sissy Spacek (In the Bedroom).

Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes host the 2022 Oscars this Sunday. See all the nominees here.
