“Now that everyone is asking… yes, we’ve been working on an edit feature since last year!” Twitter tweeted.

Twitter’s announcement about the edit feature comes after it was revealed that tech mogul Elon Musk recently purchased a 9.2 percent stake in the company, making him Twitter’s largest stakeholder.

On Monday (April 4), Elon tweeted out a poll asking users to vote on whether or not Twitter should add an edit button. 74% of voters voted in favor of the feature.

Twitter then clarified that their announcement about the edit feature had nothing to do with Elon‘s poll.

“No, we didn’t get the idea from a poll,” the company tweeted.

According to Twitter, the company plans on testing the edit button first on Twitter Blue, the app’s monthly subscription feature, “in the coming months to learn what works, what doesn’t, and what’s possible.”

Following the edit button announcement, Twitter’s head of consumer product, Jay Sullivan, addressed the potential dangers that could come with this update.

“Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation,” Jay tweeted. “Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.”
