Prince Harry Cites 'Hurt, Embarrassment & Distress' in New Lawsuit Against the 'Mail on Sunday'

Prince Harry is taking legal action.

In new court docs published by Variety on Friday (April 22), the Duke of Sussex said a series of articles from British tabloid the Mail on Sunday have caused “serious damage to his reputation and substantial hurt, embarrassment and distress which is continuing.”

Prince Harry launched the lawsuit earlier this year after the Mail on Sunday reported on another lawsuit he’s involved in with the British government. Harry is currently applying for a judicial review against the U.K. Home Office in order to for them to provide security for himself, his wife Meghan Markle and their two kids, 2-year-old Archie and 10-month-old Lilibet.

The couple have claimed that security risks have been a key factor in their decision not to return to the U.K. with their children.

The latest lawsuit specifically addresses two Mail on Sunday articles about Harry‘s case, which he claims suggested that he was lying about his offer to privately pay for his security.

The lawsuit also claims the articles “manipulate[d] and confuse[d] public opinion” against Harry by alluding to his use of “spin doctors” who were instructed to “put out false and misleading statements about his willingness to pay for police protection,” while implying that he had tried to keep his lawsuit against the Home Office a secret.

Harry called these allegations “self-evidently exceptionally serious and damaging” because they “constitute an attack on his honesty and integrity and undermine his fitness to be involved both in charitable and philanthropic work in general, and in efforts to tackle online misinformation in particular (through the Archewell Foundation).”

He’s asking the court to grant him aggravated damages for libel, an injunction to prevent them from publishing the stories or similar stories again, as well as an order that the Mail on Sunday publishes the court’s judgment.

It was announced that Prince Harry had launched a lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and Mail Online, back in February.
