N.Y. Judge Holds Trump in Contempt, Orders Daily Fines of $10,000

A New York state judge found former President Donald Trump in civil contempt of court on Monday (April 25), issuing a $10,000 a day fine until he turns over documents that have been subpoenaed by the state attorney general’s office.

The news comes as part of Attorney General Letitia James‘ ongoing investigation into Trump‘s business practices.

Letitia sought the fine as a way to force the former president to present documents her investigators say they need as part of their inquiry into the Trump Organization.

“Mr. Trump, I know you take your business seriously, and I take mine seriously. I hereby hold you in civil contempt and fine you $10,000 a day,” New York Supreme Court judge Arthur Engoron said, per CBS.

“Today, justice prevailed,” Letitia wrote in a tweet. “Our investigation into Donald Trump and the Trump Organization’s financial dealings will continue undeterred because no one is above the law.”

Letitia has accused Trump‘s company of making false representations about the valuations of his assets and has also claimed his company engaged in “fraudulent or misleading” practices. Trump‘s company has denied any wrongdoing, with the former president calling the probe “a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt of all time.”

Trump‘s lawyer Alina Habba said in Monday’s hearing that he had already complied with the subpoena, asking, “There is simply nothing more for him to provide. It was already provided. So, your honor, how is President Trump in contempt?”

She went on to call the investigation a “political crusade.”

“I feel like there’s an 800-pound gorilla in the room, and that is, why don’t we have an affidavit from him?” Judge Engoron said. “There is a difference between saying something and saying something under oath.”
