“I’m making this video because I wanted to tell the story, in my words, of where I’ve been at health-wise for the last month and what I’ve gone through,” she began.

“A lot of people know, or you may not know, I had a very scary incident on March 10. I was sitting at breakfast with my husband having a normal day, a normal conversation, and we were in the middle of talking and all of a sudden I felt a really weird sensation,” she said, explaining that it traveled from her shoulder to her fingertips.

Justin Bieber asked her what was wrong, and she said she couldn’t respond because she wasn’t sure. “I couldn’t speak, the right side of my face started drooping…I couldn’t get a sentence out,” she said, explaining she thought she was having a stroke, and Justin immediately called for a doctor.

She said that she could not verbalize answers to simple questions, but she could still walk despite speech issues. She was then taken to the hospital.

When her speech returned, Hailey said that her anxiety would then make it worse again. She felt back to normal by the time she hit the emergency room. They did a check-list for a stroke, and she scored a zero.

“Basically, they did some scans and they were able to see that I suffered a small blood clot to my brain, called a TIA. It’s like having a mini stroke. It feels like having a stroke, except my body was able to resolve it pretty quickly and then I didn’t have any more issues.”

Hailey then explained all of the testing that she underwent in the hospital for the possibility of any issues, including a Bubble Echo, looking for a PFO, a hole in the heart, which is something you’re born with. They told her that she didn’t have one, and she was discharged.

She then did more thorough testing at UCLA, concluding that the blood clot was due to recently starting birth control pills, as well as recently having COVID-19, and recently going on a long flight from Paris and back in a short amount of time without really moving around.

“It was a perfect storm that led to me having a blood clot,” she said.

They did more testing to find out why it went to her brain, including another test for the PFO, this time finding that she had a Grade 5 PFO, the highest you could have. “At this point, I was just grateful that they found it,” she said, adding that “the conclusion was that I had a blood clot that traveled into my heart, and instead of what typically happens, and the heart would filter it to your lungs…what happened with me is my blood clot escaped through the hole and it traveled to my brain, and that is why I suffered a TIA.”

The recommendation was to do a PFO closure, a procedure to “button close” the flap in the heart, which the tissue grows over. She recently had the procedure done, and she feels “great” and “relieved that we were able to figure everything out, that we were able to get it closed, that I will be able to just move on from this really scary situation and live my life.”

She also included resources and signs that you may want to look out for if you’re experiencing something similar.
