Tobey Maguire Reveals He Was 'Practically Suffocating' While Filming Iconic Upside-Down Kiss Scene for 'Spider-Man'

The first Spider-Man movie, starring Tobey Maguire, is celebrating its 20th anniversary!

The superhero flick was released back on May 3, 2002, and in honor of the movie’s anniversary, fans took a look back at some old interviews where the 46-year-old actor chatted about the movie.

In one interview, Tobey opened up about filming that iconic upside-down kiss scene with Kirsten Dunst, revealing he was “practically suffocating” while filming the scene.

As fans can remember, Mary Jane (Dunst) kisses an upside-down Spider-Man (Maguire) in the rain after he saved her from being attacked in a New York City alley.

“There was rain pouring down my nose … and then Kirsten pulls the mask up to [my nose] and it’s blocking the air passage there, so I couldn’t breathe,” Tobey shared in the interview, via The Hollywood Reporter. “And then she’s kissing me, blocking the air passage there, so there’s nowhere else to breathe.”

He went on to say that he had to take quick, short breaths out of the sides of his mouth while filming the scene.

“It was really tough, actually,” Tobey added. “It was really challenging. They’d yell cut, and I would be [gasping for air], totally out of breath. It was torture. It makes you realize how important oxygen is.”

If you missed it, Tobey reunited with Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland for the one and only joint interview between the three Peter Parkers.

Check out what they had to say about the big moment in the new flick, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
