Justin stars as Steve “Diffy” Deffibaugh, who is just one of the sheriff’s deputies investigating the murder of Betty Gore, and he actually shares many scenes with Jessica‘s titular character, who doesn’t believe her story for a minute.

Jason is Justin‘s on-screen police partner.

According to Jessica, via ET, Justin was reading the scripts “because I always ask him for his opinion on everything I’m doing,” when he asked who was going to portray the deputy.

“He said, ‘Oh, who’s playing this character?’ I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know, probably somebody local. We don’t have any money left,’” she told him, just before he volunteered for the role.

Jessica added that Justin and Jason were “so brilliant together. Clearly, Jason is a comedic genius and Justin is in his own right as well. And the way they work off each other and the improv that they did, it was amazing to see.”

In fact, the chemistry between the two guys translated off screen too, and Jessica says that “the two of them had become besties.”

“They text all the time [and] had a lot of discussion about their character. Also, there were long phone calls,” Melanie said.

New episodes of Candy premiere every night until the finale on Friday, May 13, on Hulu.

If you missed it, Jessica weighed in on the verdict that the real Candy received in the trial.
