At the party, the couple had a meat platter set up to look like the corpse of the late “Rehab” singer.
The platter included a sign that read The Corpse of Amy Winehouse,” with ingredients including “Beef ribs, pulled pork, chicken sausage in a spicy BBQ sauce.”
The original photo was taken by Justin Mikita – who is Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s now-husband – and has since been deleted.
The photo has since resurfaced online, and Neil has been facing a lot of backlash for making a joke about Amy‘s tragic death.
The Halloween party was thrown in October 2011, just a few short months after Amy died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011 at the age of 27.
On Monday (May 16), Neil released a statement apologizing for the inappropriate joke.
“A photo recently resurfaced from a Halloween-themed party my husband and I hosted 11 years ago,” Neil shared with Entertainment Tonight. “It was regrettable then, and it remains regrettable now. Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-generation talent, and I’m sorry for any hurt this image caused.”
