Alicia Keys Appears to Defend Performing 'Empire State of Mind' at Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee Concert Amid Backlash

Alicia Keys is seemingly addressing the backlash surrounding her performance at Queen Elizabeth‘s Platinum Jubilee concert.

Over the weekend, the 41-year-old entertainer performed at the Platinum Party at the Palace in England, which celebrated the 70th anniversary of 96-year-old monarch taking the crown as the Queen of England.

While on stage, Alicia performed “Empire State of Mind,” which many people found confusing since the song is about New York City and Alicia was performing in England.

“Call me old fashioned, but why is Alicia Keys singing about NY when she is celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in LONDON?” one person tweeted.

Another person also tweeted, “So @aliciakeys sings about New York at the queen’s platinum jubilee why the hell were American entertainers even invited.”

Amid all the backlash and confusion, Alicia took to Instagram to share a video documenting her preparations for the performance, revealing that Queen Elizabeth “personally” requested the set list.

“Telling the boys that the Queen requested the songs that I’m singing,” Alicia said in the video. “And they were like, ‘You can’t refuse the Queen.”

Her 11-year-old son Egypt then added, “You can’t refuse the Queen. It’s against the law here.”

While Queen Elizabeth didn’t attend the concert, all these Royal Family members were there!
