John Hinckley Jr. Apologizes to Jodie Foster After Attempted Ronald Reagan Assassination in First TV Interview

On March 30, 1981, the then 25-year-old man attempted to assassinate the President outside the Washington Hilton as he walked to his limousine. John later said that he was motivated to carry out the attempt to try and impress the actress.

He was found not guilty due to insanity, and spent more than 30 years at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C. A judge recently granted him full freedom after the gradual lifting of confinement conditions since 2016.

He specifically apologized “to Jodie Foster for bringing her into this…I feel badly about that. I feel badly for all of them.”

“I have true remorse for what I did. I know [the victims] probably can’t forgive me now, but I just want them to know that I am sorry for what I did,” he said on CBS Mornings.

“I’m glad I did not succeed. Very much so…I’m sure the country was traumatized. I’m very sorry for that.”

The man now lives in Williamsburg, Va., and wishes to perform as a touring singer-songwriter.

“I don’t know anybody else who’s certainly had a life like I’ve had. I mean, what I tell people now, if you want to get to know John Hinckley, listen to his songs.”

Jodie Foster is taking on a big new role.
