Diane Warren Apologizes for Her Comments About Beyoncé's New Album

Diane Warren is clarifying her comments about Beyoncé‘s new album, Renaissance.

On Monday (August 1), the 65-year-old songwriter seemingly called out the number of writers Beyoncé credited for one of the tracks on her record on Twitter, though she did not explicitly name the the 40-year-old performer in her tweet.

“How can there be 24 writers on a song?” Diane wrote, adding an eye-roll emoji. She followed up in a separate tweet, “This isn’t meant as shade, I’m just curious. That’s 23 more than are on mine.”

Fans quickly took to social media to respond to her remarks, with one user claiming that Diane was attempting to “devalue” Beyoncé’s work.

The Dream, who has collaborated with Beyoncé in the past and also worked on Renaissance, replied to her tweet with: “You mean how’s does our (Black) culture have so many writers? Well it started because we couldn’t afford certain things starting out,so we started sampling and it became an art form, a major part of the Black Culture (hip hop) in America. Had that era not happen who knows. U good?”

“I didn’t mean that as an attack or as disrespect,” Diane wrote back. “I didn’t know this, thank [you] for making me aware of it. No need to be mean about it.”

She then directly addressed Beyoncé, who she had previously worked with for the song “I Was Here” for her album 4. “Ok, I meant no disrespect to Beyoncé, who I’ve worked with and admire,” she tweeted. “I’m sorry for the misunderstanding.”

It was recently announced that Beyoncé would be changing the lyrics to one of her new songs after facing backlash. Find out more here.
