King Charles III Officially Proclaimed King During Accession Council Ceremony, Prince William Stands By His Side (Photos & Video)
During the first-ever televised accession council ceremony, Charles III was proclaimed the King of the United Kingdom and fourteen Commonwealth realms.
The 73-year-old royal officially was named the King during the meeting on Saturday morning (September 10) in the State Apartments of St. James’s Palace in London, England.
Standing by Charles’ side were his wife Camilla, Queen Consort and his son Prince William, who was just named the new Prince of Wales. He was automatically the King the moment that his mother Queen Elizabeth died two days earlier, so the ceremony was just a formality.
Elizabeth‘s accession ceremony was not televised, but her coronation was shown on television the following year. Historian Vernon Bogdnaor told BBC News that the decision to televise Charles‘ ceremony is “a sign of the times that the monarchy has to adapt to a more open and less deferential society.”
