Taylor Swift Reveals the Meaning of the Red Scarf in 'All Too Well'

Taylor Swift revealed the meaning of the red scarf in the song “All Too Well” at the Toronto International Film Festival where she was promoting her 10-minute short film for the song.

The song also mentions a scarf she left “at your sister’s house and you’ve still got it in your drawer even now” because “it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me.”

“The scarf is a metaphor,” Taylor told a panel audience at the event, “and we turned it red because red is a very important color in this album, which is called Red.”

“And, I think when I say it’s a metaphor, I’m just going to stop, and I’m going to say, thanks for the incredible question, whoever asked it. You’ve really taken us for a ride,” she said.

Many fans have speculated that “All Too Well” is about Taylor‘s brief romance with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Taylor was at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival to talk about directing the short film for her song “All Too Well” and to introduce the first-ever screening of the short film on 35mm.
