Aaron Carter revealed that he willingly entered a rehabilitation program in an attempt to regain custody of his 10-month-old son Prince.

The 34-year-old opened up about the decision to enter the month-long program in an interview with The U.S. Sun and explained that his partner Melanie Martin‘s mother has custody of their child.

However, Aaron made it clear that he was not addicted to Xanax but was attempting to avoid marijuana.

“The main reason why I enrolled into Lionrock Recovery outpatient is to help with the weed,” he said. “I don’t want to smoke weed anymore. I don’t really need to.”

He also revealed that it wasn’t a relapse that inspired the decision. Instead, he was trying to battle triggers. “I haven’t had any relapses or anything like that, it’s just triggers are big right now for me [and] I want my son back,” he explained.

The musician explained that the program was not court ordered and that he voluntarily entered it.

He also shed light on what it was like. “It’s an abstinence program and I work with an individual counselor,” he said. “I do group therapy, parenting classes, domestic violence classes, I got myself certified in CPR, just a lot of different things.”

Aaron addressed comparisons between his personal struggles and Michael Jackson‘s. Notably, he highlighted one difference.

“The difference between Michael and I is that Michael didn’t go to rehab, ever,” Aaron said. “He never went and got rehabilitated for actual addictions that people suffer from whatever drug of choice it is.”

Aaron and Melanie split shortly after the birth of their son and have had a contentious relationship since. However, they have since reconciled.
