Angelina Jolie Signs On To Star In 'Maria,' a Biopic About Opera Singer Maria Callas

Angelina Jolie has a new role in the works.

The 47-year-old Maleficent actress signed on to work with Spencer director Pablo Larrain on a biopic about opera singer Maria Callas, according to Variety. The project will be titled Maria and is said to trace the opera singer’s life through her death in 1977.

Steven Knight will write the story, and Juan de Dios Larrain signed on to act as producer.

“I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge,” Angelina said about the opportunity. “Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”

“Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream,” Pablo added. “To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”
