'Green Lantern' HBO Max Series Is Being Entirely Redeveloped - What's Happening With the DC Comics Show Now?

DC Comics

The Green Lantern series will now focus on John Stewart, one of DC’s first Black superheroes.

Writer and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith has departed the series after writing scripts for a full season of eight episodes. Sources tell THR that he chose to leave the project after a series of regime changes at HBO Max, its parent company, producers Warner Bros. Television and now DC Comics.

The character of John Stewart was reportedly off the table to producers at first, who wanted to focus on the first Green Lantern, the openly gay Alan Scott, and Guy Gardner as well as a “multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.”

A decision was made to start over and center the show around John Stewart. The character first appeared in the early 1970s, and was modeled after Sidney Poitier.

At the time of the show’s announcement, insiders claimed the budget was the largest for HBO Max, at an estimated $120 million range.

The show’s budget going forward is expected to “be significantly less” as HBO Max continues to go through regime changes.

Neither Finn nor Jeremy remain attached to Green Lantern, but sources say producers are still eager to work with both actors when and if the project moves forward.

At the same time, there’s huge news about another beloved DC Comics character.
