'Heartstopper' Crew & Fans Share Messages of Support After Kit Connor Says He Felt 'Forced' To Come Out as Bisexual

The 18-year-old star returned to Twitter after leaving amid accusations of “queerbaiting” last month and wrote that he felt pressured out of the closet.
“back for a minute. i’m bi. congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. i think some of you missed the point of the show. bye,” he tweeted.

Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman shared a message of support and called out viewers who watched the show and then “gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes.”
Sebastian Croft, who played Ben Hope in the Netflix series, also sent love to his castmate.
“a big fat f-ck you to everyone who said that kit connor was queerbaiting and an even bigger f-ck you to everyone who wouldn’t leave him alone about his sexuality,” one fan tweeted. “kit I love you and we’re sorry.”
Others called out people who watched Kit‘s character Nick Nelson struggle with his own coming out journey before turning around and bullying the actor. Some also pointed out that accusing celebrities of “queerbaiting” can put them in this sort of difficult situation.

I truly don't understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes. I hope all those people are embarrassed as FUCK. Kit you are amazing 💖

i cannot believe that some of you are so insufferable that you watched a show about positive identity and forced kit connor to go through the exact thing that his character was terrified of. pic.twitter.com/tZ6M7PXWkG

Kit Connor didn’t queerbait you
Taylor Swift isn’t queerbaiting you
Harry Styles isn’t queerbaiting you
Misha Collins didn’t queerbait youREAL PEOPLE CANT QUEERBAIT YOU! It’s a term used in media literacy. No actual person owes you any clarification on their sexuality. PERIOD.

Speaking as a bi man with a boyfriend, seeing people bully Kit Connor & Harry Styles for “queerbaiting” until forced out is gross.
Queerbaiting is about marketing fictional characters as “maybe LGBT” for clout, NOT for people keeping their life private or “(not) acting gay”. https://t.co/DBX6JQGySQ

kit playing a character who takes his time discovering himself, who has support around him and isn’t forced out of the closet when he’s not ready then going back to reality and literally outing himself is not fair. kit connor i am so sorry for the way you’ve been treated.
