White House Responds to Press Complaints About Lack of Access to Naomi Biden’s Wedding After ‘Vogue’ Publishes Exclusive Photos

A few members of the White House Press Corps took to Twitter to express displeasure at the fact that Vogue got photos of Naomi Biden‘s wedding to Peter Neal, which took place this past weekend at the White House. Naomi is the granddaughter of President Joe Biden, and the daughter of Hunter Biden.
If you didn’t see, earlier in the day, Vogue released an exclusive photo shoot from the couple, and many believed the photos implied that the fashion magazine was given press access on the actual wedding day, which was Saturday (November 19). The press corps was not invited to the wedding, and were not able to cover the event live.

Some of the press corps complaints included one from Bloomberg News‘ Nancy Cook, who quote tweeted Vogue‘s reveal of the wedding photos and wrote, “White House press secretary Karine Jeanne-Pierre on Nov. 18: ‘They have decided to make this wedding private. It is a family event. It is — and we are going to respect Naomi and Peter‘s wishes,'” seemingly to imply that this information was inaccurate.
Another complaint came from Washington Post‘s Ashley Parker, who wrote, “I spent four years covering the Trump WH and two years covering the Biden WH. What’s fascinating is that they both lie, albeit in v different ways. Trump team was shameless, whereas Biden team is too cute by half.”
CNN’s Kate Bennett responded to a report that Vogue wasn’t there and added, “But also they WERE there — the reception photo, the kissing the groom on the White House lawn video, the family photo, them going up the stairs to the residence…”
During the Tuesday (November 22) White House Press Briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about this controversy, and revealed that Vogue was NOT in attendance at the Saturday wedding. The photos released by Vogue were taken in a staged portrait session two days before the wedding.
During the very end of the press briefing, one journalist asked, “The wedding of Naomi Biden and Peter would be a private one and it would be closed to the media. Yet I’m reading all about it and looking at pictures on the Vogue website.”
The Press Secretary responded, “This was not a national security meeting. This was not an economic meeting. This was not an economic summit. This was a young couple’s wedding with their friends and family. This is what that was. This is what happened here on Saturday.”
“Just to be very clear. Vogue did not attend the wedding. They were not there. They did not attend the wedding. There was no press access at the wedding. It was a private family event,” she continued. “The couple asked that their wedding event be closed to the media. And it was. It was a closed event. A private family event. Vogue did a portrait shoot on Thursday afternoon before the wedding in the green room. I would also remind you that many photos were released to the public on Saturday, after the wedding, to everyone. Vogue actually held their photos…they embargoed it until today. So that…it would give ample time for the photos to be in the public sphere.
“It is inaccurate…it is not right, to suggest a Vogue cover was open to the press,” she concluded.
