Johnny Depp Was Considered For 'Pulp Fiction,' But He Wasn't Quentin Tarantino's Choice: Here's Why He Was In The Running

Pulp Fiction might have featured a dramatically different cast had things gone differently.

According to a leaked casting list that circulates the internet from time to time, Johnny Depp was the second choice to play Pumpkin, a role that went to Tim Roth.

Director Quentin Tarantino explained how the 59-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star’s name wound up on the list during a recent interview, and it sounds like it wasn’t by his choice.

Quentin explained why the list exists during an appearance on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast.

“I didn’t know exactly who I wanted to play this part or that part, so I wrote a giant list with a ton of names. I wanted to get them all pre-approved, and I didn’t know if it was gonna work out or if I would vibe with the person or if they would even do a good job. I just wanted to get them approved,” he explained.

According to the director, executive Mike Medavoy wanted Johnny as the second choice for the role of Pumpkin, but Quentin had his eyes on Christian Slater. It was all a matter of star power.

Quentin explained that he had a conversation with Mike about the decision and asked if he thought Johnny would really help with the box office. “Mike said, ‘It wont add a dime but it would make me feel better,’” he revealed.
