Sunny Balwani Sentenced to Nearly 13 Years in Prison in Theranos Fraud Case

“They misled investors, they misled patients,” U.S. District Court Judge Edward Davila said during Sunny’s sentencing hearing in San Jose, Calif., according to NBC News.

Sunny was sentenced to 155 months in prison for 12 wire fraud and conspiracy convictions tied to his role as chief operating officer of Theranos.

Sunny‘s conviction comes less than a month after Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes – whom Sunny once dated – was found guilty on four charges of fraud and was sentenced to 135 months in prison.

Sunny‘s lawyers argued that he should receive a more lenient sentence than Elizabeth, 38, because he was her subordinate. However, Judge Davila challenged their argument, saying that Sunny was also a leader in Theranos.

Theranos’ rise and fall was depicted in the Hulu series The Dropout, where Amanda Seyfried played Elizabeth and Naveen Andrews played Sunny.

The judge ordered that Sunny must surrender by March 15, 2023.
