Sam Heughan Opens Up About Suffering From 'Low-Level Eating Disorder'

Sam Heughan got candid about suffering from an eating disorder and explained why he thought it was an important conversation to have.

The 42-year-old Outlander actor delved into the topic in depth in his book Waypoints: My Scottish Journey. However, he shed further light on it during an interview on TODAY.

“I think as a young actor, quite green; not really much experience, there were a lot of pressures, certainly, starting off in the industry, that I didn’t really understand,” he explained as the cause of what he described as a “low-level eating disorder.”

“I think there was a certain body type that we were expected to have,” Sam added. “Women talk about it a lot, but I don’t think men do, and I wanted to mention it.”

He said that he’s taken steps to help prevent others from facing similar situations. Sam explained that he launched a charity fitness program – My Peak Challenge.

“It was about education and about getting information to other people so they don’t face the same pressures,” he said.
