The origin of Cate‘s role in Pinnochio was told in the behind-the-scenes documentary Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio: Handcarved Cinema, about the making of Pinocchio.

The film was Cate‘s second movie directed by Del Toro after starring in his Oscar-nominated film Nightmare Alley.

“We were shooting Nightmare Alley. Cate Blanchett and I were having such a good time that she said, ‘You gotta give me a part on Pinocchio.’ I go, ‘The only part left is a monkey.’” he said.

“I would do anything. I would play a pencil in a movie for you,” Cate said.

Cate later went on to play the role of the squawking monkey.

Cate recently revealed that she made her acting debut at school in Melbourne with a part in The Hobbit.
