‘1899’ Showrunner Jantje Friese Spoke About Season Two Just Weeks Before Netflix Cancelled The Series

Fans were shocked by Netflix‘s announcement that they cancelled 1899 just after one season on the streamer.

The series, from Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, became the first cancellation of the new year.

“That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget,” the co-showrunners shared in a statement.

Just a couple of weeks before the decision, Jantje opened up about a second season of the show.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Jantje opened up about her process in planning out the series and revealing that she had a clear picture of what would’ve happened in a potential season two.

“We always like to have an ending before we start. We want to know where we are going. We’re moving through a story, and we want to know how it will be resolved in the end,” she said just a month ago.

Jantje continued, saying that “there may be some ideas that are more loosely thrown in, [but] as we go through the process, the ideas can shift and move into a different position.”

She referenced Dark as an example, saying that “the parallel universe was always planned to be in the second season. And then while we were working on it, we decided to move it to the third season.”

“Stuff like that always happens. You just trying to be flexible, to really allow the process to surprise you while you’re going through it, but still kind of knowing where you’re sailing to.”

If you missed it, another popular Netflix series still hasn’t received a season two order, and fans have a theory why…
