The Cast of '1923' Don't Even Know How They're Related: 'It's A Running Joke'

There are suddenly, a lot of Duttons to keep track of with the Yellowstone franchise expanding from the flagship show to 1883, and the most recent, 1923.

According to one star of the newest show, James Badge Dale, the cast actually needs a flow chart to keep up with the ever-growing family.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, James said that keeping up with the Duttons is becoming a “running joke” about how each character is related to the other.

“Harrison [Ford] and I would be like, ‘I think we’re related, I don’t know how,’” he said. “We all need a flow chart.”

James added that he doesn’t “know the tree. I’ve seen [flow charts] online, when people have tried to create them. I don’t know if those are accurate or not.”

He also advises those makers that they might not be accurate should Taylor Sheridan change his mind about something.

“We could be saying one thing or thinking one thing, and Taylor can decide something else and we’ll be watching ‘1943 and realize it’s a little different and he’ll change it up,” he says.

James‘ character, John Dutton Sr., was killed in a shoot out in the most recent episode. His character was the nephew to Harrison‘s Jacob.

As for if he could return, James is leaving that door open.

“I think John Dutton Sr. is a huge part of this story. From 1883 to 1923, I don’t know what Taylor has in store,” he shared. “If he calls me? Cool, I’ll be there in a second. The experience I had with this crew and this cast, and specifically Harrison and Helen, but mostly Harrison, was once-in-a-lifetime. There aren’t many movie stars left. This is an epic piece of writing. I was proud to be a part of it.”

1923 airs Sundays on Paramount+.
