Prince Harry's Memoir 'Spare' Breaks Record For Any Nonfiction Book From Publisher

Prince Harry‘s memoir “Spare” has sold 1.4 million copies, according to publishing company Penguin Random House.

The sales beat the publisher’s previous first-day non-fiction record, for Barack Obama‘s “A Promised Land” in 2020 and Michelle Obama‘s “Becoming” in 2018.

“The first full day of sales of ‘Spare’ represents the largest first-day sales total for any nonfiction book ever published by Penguin Random House,” the publisher said in a statement.

Random House also said the first US printing of “Spare” was 2 million copies and has “gone back to press for additional copies to meet demand.”

The controversial book holds nothing back and has been criticized by the British media. In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, Prince Harry clarified the quote from his book about killing 25 Taliban fighters.

“Vulnerable and heartfelt, brave and intimate, Spare is the story of someone we may have thought we already knew, but now we can truly come to understand Prince Harry through his own words,” Gina Centrello, president and publisher of the Random House Group, said in the statement.

J.R. Moehringer, the ghostwriter who helped to co-write the 38-year-old royal’s tell-all memoir released last week, recently addressed mistakes featured in the book that have been noticed by readers.
