Alec Baldwin Formally Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Potential Prison Sentence Revealed

Alec Baldwin has formally been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust.

The actor was holding the gun which discharged and killed Halyna, though he has claimed he did not pull the trigger.

Prosecutors say that Alec shouldn’t have pointed the gun as “the first rule of gun safety is never to point a gun at someone you don’t intend on shooting.”

“This reckless deviation from known standards and practice and protocol directly caused the fatal shooting,” the statement said (via THR). “Baldwin acted with willful disregard of the safety of others and in a manner which endangered other people.”

Prosecutors also claim that Alec is at fault for hiring armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the person responsible for gun safety on set. The gun was supposed to contain dummy rounds, but live rounds ended up in the gun.

“As the producer of a firearm intense film, evidence shows that Baldwin allowed, through acts or omissions, the hiring of inexperienced and unqualified [Gutierrez-Reed] for this production, failed to mitigate or establish more precautions to protect against [Gutierrez-Reed’s] inexperience, or failed to demand the minimum safety standards, protocols, and requirements on set,” the statement of probable cause said.

THR reports that neither Baldwin or Gutierrez-Reed will be arrested in connection to the charges.

There’s a prison sentence associated to the charges if they are found guilty.

Variety reports that “Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed each face up to 18 months in prison if convicted, plus a potential five-year enhancement for the use of a firearm.”

Production on the movie is still scheduled to resume.
