The 31-year-old actor played the late icon’s father Elvis Presley in his biopic Elvis, which earned him a nomination in the Best Lead Actor category at the 2023 Oscars.

He shared his memories with Lisa Marie and reflected on the “bittersweet” time during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Austin told host Jimmy Fallon that he developed a quick bond with Lisa Marie after they met during an Elvis screening at Graceland.

“I’ve never had an experience where I met somebody and felt an immediate depth of relationship to them. She was a person who didn’t really have anything to prove and wouldn’t open up to everybody. She just opened up to me,” he recalled. “We got so close so fast.”

In the midst of awards season, he described the time as “bittersweet.”

“So much great stuff is happening but I’m just devastated for her family and for her to not be here celebrating with us,” Austin said.

Thankfully, they were able to share time together at the 2023 Golden Globes, which was Lisa Marie‘s last public appearance. Austin won Best Actor at the awards show and thanked the family in a heartfelt acceptance speech.

“I’ll never forget that for the rest of my life,” he shared about the memories.

Austin also opened up about a time where he saw a very different side of Elvis through his daughter’s eyes – when Lisa Marie took him up to the late icon’s bedroom.

“She said ‘I wanna show you something’ and took me up there. It was… you know. Moments like that we just sat in his bedroom. Up there, he’s not Elvis. He’s just dad. To hear those stories, I truly will treasure that forever,” he explained.
