NBC's 'La Brea' Will Likely End After Season 3, Interesting Business Reason Revealed

The NBC series La Brea was just renewed for a third season and a new report claims that the third season will likely be its last.

The popular show is currently in the middle of season two and it will return tonight after a two-month hiatus.

Season three will only consist of six episodes and there is an interesting business reason for the short order.

Deadline reports that the decision to give La Brea a six-episode order was influenced by the potential “writers and/or directors and actors strike.” The current Writers Guild of America contract will expire on May 1 and contracts for the Screen Actors Guild and the Directors Guild of America will expire on June 30.

Production on season three will begin in March and will likely wrap before the strike.

Series regulars on broadcast shows are contracted for six seasons and the cast of La Brea was given 10-episode minimum guarantees for each season. The network went to the actors and asked them to lower their contracts to six episodes for season three so that they don’t have to pay them for all 10. Deadline reports that actors agreed to the change in exchange for being released from their contracts after season three.

“There a small chance that the show could continue with a new family beyond that, played by a new cast,” the site reported.
