Dwayne Johnson Reveals How He Was Able to Pull Off Surprising Adele at Grammys 2023

Dwayne Johnson is looking back at making Adele‘s dreams come true!

At the 2023 Grammys on Sunday (February 5), the 50-year-old Black Adam actor gave the 34-year-old “Easy On Me” singer a huge surprise when he sneaked up behind her and gave her a big hug.

For years, Adele has said that she’s wanted to meet Dwayne, but the two were never able coordinate their schedules. She previously invited him to her One Night Only concert special at the Griffith Observatory in 2021, but he wasn’t able to attend.

In a new interview, Dwayne revealed how he was able to pull off surprising Adele.

“We wanted to do something special for Adele,” Dwayne shared with Variety. “I know that she is a very big fan of mine and has made that clear publicly many times. But I’ve got to tell you, I am a huge fan of hers, as well — her music, her journey, her openness and directness in how she speaks. I’ve always admired that about her.”

Dwayne has been busy filming his upcoming movie Red One, but he was able to get some time off to attend the Grammys with wife Lauren Hashian.

Once Grammys executive producer Ben Winston found out Dwayne was able to attend, he pitched the idea of surprising Adele at the top of the show.

“We were trying to figure out something to do that was going to be fun and surprise her, and we had kicked around ideas all week,” Dwayne recalled. “The key to a surprise like that is to actually keep it a surprise. Myself and the Grammys went to great lengths to make sure that Adele was authentically surprised in the moment, and she was.”

After their initial meeting, Dwayne took to the stage later in the show and presented the award for Best Pop Solo Performance, which Adele ended up winning for “Easy On Me.”

“It was just a great surprise and I was able to chat with her a little bit and her boyfriend, Rich Paul,” Dwayne said. “And talk about the universe meeting our friendship halfway: I get up onstage and I open that Grammy envelope and it said ‘Adele.’ So that’s why I was able to say, ‘Get up here best friend, Adele!’”

He added, “It was such a special night. And she’s such a special iconic brilliant inspiring artist who has inspired a generation and who will continue to inspire generations to come. I love that woman. We had a really great time tonight. I think probably the best part about it is she’s just cool — and I had never met her before.”
