Variety says that Sony Music, as well as another financial partner, are “negotiating to acquire 50% of the Michael Jackson estate’s interests in a number of the artist’s sources of income”, and the price point for the sale is around $800 million to $900 million.
Primary Wave Music also holds a stake in Michael Jackson‘s estate.
Sony was Michael‘s record label for quite a handful of years, and also partnered with him to form Sony/ATV Music Publishing. This venture also included his own stake in The Beatles catalog.
Should the sale go through, it would not only be the biggest purchase so far, but also be just the latest in Sony’s acquisitions. They previously purchased both Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen‘s catalogs.
