Patrick Mahomes & Jalen Hurts Make History as First Black Quarterbacks to Face Off in Super Bowl Game

The 2023 Super Bowl will be history in the making as Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts become the first Black quarterbacks to face off in a Super Bowl game.

Patrick, 27, is a star player for the Kansas City Chiefs. Jalen, 24, has distinguished himself in the same position as a teammate for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The teams are set to play against each other on Sunday (February 12) at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

Patrick opened up about the historic game in a new interview.

“I think about it a lot,” Patrick told AP about the opportunity. “The quarterbacks that came before me — Shack Harris, Doug Williams — that laid the foundation for me to be in this position. It goes across all sports. If you think about Jackie Robinson and the people who broke the color barrier in baseball, I wouldn’t be standing here today if it wasn’t for them”.

He continued, saying “To be lucky enough to be in this position — and play against another great guy like Jalen — it will be a special moment. I’m glad we’re here today, but how can we keep moving forward? How can we motivate kids who are younger, who want to follow their dreams to be a quarterback?”

If Jalen wins, he’ll join an exclusive group of Black quarterbacks with Super Bowl rings. Patrick is already in the group, alongside Russell Wilson and Doug Williams.
