Will Tom Selleck Make A Cameo In 'Magnum P.I.' Reboot on NBC? Here's What We Know

Magnum P.I. is returning with a brand new season on NBC tonight!

With the show hopping networks for season five of the rebooted series, questions about if original series star Tom Selleck might pop up on the series at all.

Here’s what we found out about that…

Tom starred as the original Thomas Magnum from 1980 to 1988 over the course of eight seasons.

While fans are still hoping for a cameo from Tom, it doesn’t look like that will ever happen.

Back in 2018, Tom spoke to TV Insider and shared not only his thoughts on the show, but whether he and his iconic red Hawaiian shirt and Detroit Tigers cap could be seen on the series.

He shared that while he did have a discussion about the reboot with producers, he made the decision to stay away from cameos for it.

“I went home and thought about it for about a day,” he shared. “In the end, I thought, ‘We couldn’t have a better bow tied around our show.’ We went off with our final episode as the number one show on all of television. We’re in the Smithsonian for recognizing Vietnam veterans in a positive light, the first show to really do that. And it led to countless other opportunities. I just felt success is so hard to come by in this business, why do I want to root for somebody to fail? I just stepped back, and said, ‘I won’t get in your way.’”

Tom added that he did give this reboot, which stars Jay Hernandez in the Thomas Magnum role, his blessing after years of rumors of reboots of it.

“This seemed okay because it’s probably going to happen sooner or later,” he says. “Why choose to be offended?”

As for those guest appearances: “I told them that I won’t do some cameo guest spot to let the audience know I approve. I’m sure they’d like it, but I have an obligation to my version.”

Magnum P.I. returns for season 5 on Sunday, February 19 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
