Ariana DeBose Reacts to BAFTAs 2023 Viral Performance (& Specifically, 'Angela Bassett Did the Thing')

It looks like Ariana Debose has issued her first reaction to her viral 2023 BAFTAs performance.

If you didn’t see, the 32-year-old Oscar-winning West Side Story star was supported by a crew of dancers while she rapped about some of the stars in the audience for the awards show. The clip quickly went viral and fans could not stop pointing out lines that included “Angela Bassett did the thing,” and “Viola Davis, my Woman King.” We’ve embedded the performance below for you to see, if you haven’t already.

Amid all the talk about the commentary, Ariana actually deactivated her Twitter account.

But now, she left a comment on another Instagram account that collected some memes about the performance.

The Instagram shared several photos that poked fun at the line “Angela Bassett did the thing.”

One of the memes has a grandmother saying, “Angela Bassett did the thing,” to which her granddaughter responds, “Sure Grandma, let’s get you to bed.” Another meme showed the infamous photo of George W. Bush learning about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, with a man whispering to the former President, “Sir, Angela Bassett did the thing.”

Ariana saw the memes and actually commented, “Honestly I love this.”

The producer of the BAFTAs spoke further about the performance and revealed who wrote it.
