Ellie Goulding Addresses 'Trauma' Caused by Rumor She Cheated on Ed Sheeran with Niall Horan, Reveals Where She Stands with Ed Now

Ellie Goulding addressed the viral rumor that she cheated on Ed Sheeran with Niall Horan and the “trauma” that it caused her.

If you missed it, fans believed that Ed‘s 2014 kiss-off anthem “Don’t” was about Ellie, with some speculating that it was written after she strayed from their relationship and went out with the One Direction bandmate. The reality is quite different: Ellie and Ed never even dated.

The “Lights” hitmaker spoke out against the rumor earlier this year. She revealed how it affected her mental health and professional life in a recent interview.

According to People, Ellie told the Daily Mail that it was “fascinating how many people are interested” in the rumor, noting that it was years old.

“You know, completely honestly, it caused me a lot of trauma, actually,” she added.

The star explained how the rumor put her career on pause, saying, “I can laugh about it now, but it changed things for me.”

“I became kind of reclusive. I didn’t want to perform,” she explained. “It was nothing and it was private – and it caused me such a huge amount of grief and I resent it.”

She also pointed out how the situation made her envious of her friends who didn’t live in the spotlight: “I envy the fact that my friends just spent their 20s having flings and one-night stands and what every 20-something goes through in private. But every single thing I did was written about.”

“I was made to feel like a terrible person and I really struggled with that because I know I’m not,” she added.

Ellie told the outlet that she and Ed were friends and left the drama in the past.
