“I’ll tell you again, I respect this court, but I’m innocent,” Murdaugh said, according to NBC News. “I would never under any circumstances hurt my wife, Maggie, and I would never under any circumstances hurt my son, Paul Paul.”

Judge Clifton Newman then responded, “It might not have been you. It might have been the monster you became.”

Judge Newman then gave Murdaugh two life sentences without parole in the fatal shootings of his wife and son from 2021. The pair were found shot to death on the family’s property.

For a separate charge of two counts of possession of a weapon during the deadly crime, Murdaugh was not sentenced because of the life sentence.

During the hearing, Judge Newman called the case “one of the most troubling” he had ever seen.

“As a member of the legal community and well-known member of the legal community, you’ve practiced law before me and we’ve seen each other in various occasions throughout the years,” Judge Newman said to Murdaugh.

The judge continued, “It was especially heartbreaking for me to see you go in the media from being a grieving father who lost the wife and son to being the person indicted and convicted of killing them.”

Murdaugh still faces at least 99 financial-related crimes in 19 different indictments tied to stealing and embezzling from his law clients over several years.
