“I distinctly remember calling [Jack Antonoff] up when I had decided that this would be the first single off Midnights and I said, ‘I’m finally just going to pick a first single based on the one that I like the most and I’m just prepping you, I don’t think that this is going to be a quote-unquote hit song.’ We’re kind of like fed the messaging that in order for it to be a hit song it has to be like really simple. It has to be stuck in everyone’s head,” she said.
Taylor added, “I fully prepped him, like, it’s not going to work at radio. This is not why we’re doing this. So I’d like to thank iHeart and radio everywhere and fans everywhere for proving that wrong. Because that’s a really wonderful surprise!”
