Donald Glover, AKA Childish Gambino, Says 'This Is America' Was a Drake Diss Track Originally

Donald Glover, otherwise known as Childish Gambino, is revealing details about “This Is America.”

The 39-year-old star got candid in a new interview about his hit 2018 track, which went viral and sparked conversations about race and police brutality.

However, it actually started as something less serious: a Drake diss track.

“I had the idea three years before. I told [director] Hiro [Murai] the idea, and he’s like, ‘I really want to do that.’… The idea for the song started as a joke,” he said to GQ.

“To be completely honest, ‘This is America’ — that was all we had was that line. It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this s–t sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it,” he continued.

His feud with Drake started in 2014 when he said during an Australian gig that his rapper alter ego was better than Drake, Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q combined. The two have reportedly become friends in the years since.

He also revealed he’s working with Malia Obama on a film.
