Doja Cat Reflects on an Unexpected Challenge While Getting Into Her Iconic Crystal Look for Paris Fashion Week

Doja Cat delivered one of the most distinctive looks of her career when she attended the Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring Summer 2023 show during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, and she did so while sick.

The 27-year-old “Say So” pop star arrived at the fashion show covered in more than 30,000 red Swarovski crystals that were applied by makeup icon Pat McGrath. The application process took several hours.

During a recent interview, Doja reflected on her iconic look and revealed what was going on for her behind the scenes that makes her appearance even more impressive.

Speaking to L’Officiel, Doja explained that she had instantly agreed to the idea when it was pitched to her, but it was a challenge.

“I didn’t realize I had to get up at four in the morning [the day of the show] to get there by five or something,” she admitted. “So we get there, and I didn’t realize till I sat down in the chair that I had gastroenteritis. So I had gotten super ill.”

She powered through, saying that she could “feel the twirling of a knife” in her stomach.

“The whole crew was so sweet. The whole glam team was so understanding and so sensitive and kind. It was great and very professional. I was trying to joke around and make light of the situation, but as time progressed, it only got worse,” she recalled.

Doja continued, saying, “My stomach felt like there was a blade in it, and it was just spinning 100 miles per hour. I never felt pain worse than that—and on one of the most important days of my life! So it was full of emotions and just crazy feelings.”

Pat helped out by getting her some ginger ale to settle her stomach, and Doja stayed calm as she was swarmed by a glam team who covered her in red paint and glitter before gluing the individual crystals to her body.

“I’m very, very proud of it,” she said about the look, adding that she was “down to sacrifice my comfort” for the sale of achieving an idea in her head.
