Harry Belafonte Dead - Iconic Singer & Activist Dies at 96

Harry Belafonte has sadly passed away.

The legendary crooner, known best for hit songs like “Banana Boat,” “Island in the Sun,” “Jump in the Line,” “Shake, Shake Senora” and “Jamaica Farewell,” passed away on Tuesday (April 25) at the age of 96 at his home in the Upper West Side in Manhattan, his publicist confirmed to the New York Post.

Aside from being a hit singer and an iconic figure within the folk music scene, Harry was also a Civil Rights activist. He was a friend of Martin Luther King, Jr., and won many awards for his work, including the Nelson Mandela Courage Award.

He famously became the first Black person to win an Emmy in 1960, and also won several Grammys and starred on Broadway in productions like Three For Tonight. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts.

Our thoughts are with Harry Belafonte‘s loved ones at this difficult time.
