Tony Awards 2023 Will Air as Scheduled: WGA Won't Picket, But Has Required Changes to Be Made

The 2023 Tony Awards will air as planned on June 11, but changes are going to be made to the show amid the Writers Guild of America strike.

It was previously reported that the show would need to be postponed after the WGA denied a waiver to the Tony Awards Productions. The organization requested a waiver to move forward with the planned ceremony and not have picketers at the show.

The waiver was denied, but after an appeal, the WGA has agreed to not picket the event, though a waiver is not being provided.

“Tony Awards Productions (a joint venture of the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing) has communicated with us that they are altering this year’s show to conform with specific requests from the WGA, and therefore the WGA will not be picketing the show,” the guild said (via THR).

The statement added, “As they have stood by us, we stand with our fellow workers on Broadway who are impacted by our strike.”

“Responsibility for having to make changes to the format of the 2023 Tony Awards rests squarely on the shoulders of Paramount/CBS and their allies. They continue to refuse to negotiate a fair contract for the writers represented by the WGA,” they concluded.

The Tony Awards will likely go unscripted, but the Broadway community will greatly benefit from the national exposure!

The Tony Awards are to air on CBS on June 11 with Ariana DeBose as the host for the second year in a row. Check out the full list of nominations!
