Cannes Juror Brie Larson Says She Isn't Sure If She Will See Johnny Depp's Film

Brie Larson didn’t understand why she was being asked specifically how she felt about Johnny Depp‘s film opening for the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

“You’re asking me that?” the 33-year-old Captain Marvel actress said during a jury press conference on Tuesday. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand the correlation or why me specifically.”

Brie has been an outspoken advocate of the #MeToo movement while Johnny Depp has had very public legal battles with his ex-wife Amber Heard regarding domestic abuse allegations.

“You’ll see, I guess, if I will see it. And I don’t know how I’ll feel about it if I do,” Brie said when pressed, per Variety.

Johnny Depp sued his ex wife, Amber Heard, for $50 million in damages after she published a 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post. She was ordered to pay $10 million in compensatory damages, plus $5 million in punitive damages.

Cannes Film Festival Chief Thierry Fremaux defended the inclusion of Jeanne du Barry. “I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the U.S.,” he said during a press conference on Monday. “To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule: it’s the freedom of thinking, and the freedom of speech and act within a legal framework.”
