Goldie Hawn Talks 40-Year Relationship with Kurt Russell, Explains Why They Never Got Married

Goldie Hawn is opening up about her decades-long relationship with Kurt Russell.

Goldie, 77, and Kurt, 72, have been together since 1983, but have decided to never get married.

During a recent appearanceon Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, Goldie explained why she and Kurt haven’t tied the knot.

“Why aren’t the two of you married?” host Chris Wallace asked Goldie, to which she responded, “Why should we be? Isn’t that a better question?”

When Chris asked the question again, Goldie explained that she and Kurt have both seen what happens when a marriage ends.

Goldie was first married to director Gus Trikonis from 1969 until 1976. She then married musician Bill Hudson in 1976, with whom she shares Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson. They then divorced in 1982.

Kurt married actress Season Hubley in 1979 and they share son Boston Russell. They divorced in 1983.

“When it doesn’t work out, it ends up to be big business,” Goldie shared. “It’s always ugly. Somebody actually has to take a look and say, ‘How many divorces actually are fun? How many divorces actually don’t cost money? How many divorces actually make you hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?’”

“But [you and Kurt have] been together 40 years, you’re not going to get divorced,” Chris pointed out.

“How did you know that then?” Goldie questioned, before adding that she likes having the choice of being in a relationship.

“I like the idea that I can wake up in the morning and make decisions every day if I want to be here,” Goldie explained. “I mean relationships are hard. They’re not always easy. There’s all kinds of hurdles we go through. There’s things that we believe in, things we don’t believe in, we agree on.”

She added, “So I think ultimately staying independent with independent thinking is important, so you can hold on to yourself, and you can actually have that feeling.”
