Lorde Writes Open Letter About Grammys in a Newspaper Ad

Lorde is speaking out about her experience at the 2018 Grammys in an open letter to fans, which was published as a full-page ad in the New Zealand Herald.

The 21-year-old singer was nominated for Album of the Year, but was not invited to give a solo performance during the show. She seemingly shaded the event the next day in a tweet promoting her tour.

“Oh, hi there! I’m writing this from New York City. [My brother] Angelo and I sat in Madison Square Garden last night and saw a lot of crazy and wonderful things,” Lorde wrote in the note. “I just wanted to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for loving and embracing Melodrama the way you did. My nomination belongs to you. Thank you, also, for believing in female musicians. You set a beautiful precedent! All my love, Lorde.”

At the top of the letter, Lorde wrote tiny notes like: “Met Stevie Nicks and almost cried;” “Jay-Z‘s hands are really soft;” “Melo 4ever;” and SZA with a crown over her name.

Alessia Cara Responds to Backlash Over Best New Artist Grammys Win

Alessia Cara won the award for Best New Artist at the 2018 Grammys this weekend!

There are some who were taking to social media, upset that one of the other nominees (Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, SZA, and Julia Michaels) did not win. Alessia‘s debut single, “Here,” was first released back in 2015.

“to address the apparent backlash regarding winning something I had no control over: I didn’t log onto grammy.com and submit myself. that’s not how it works. I didn’t ask to be submitted either because there are other artists that deserve the acknowledgment. but I was nominated and won and I am not going to be upset about something I’ve wanted since I was a kid, not to mention have worked really hard for,” Alessia posted on Instagram.

Pink Fights Back Against Recording Academy President Telling Women in Music to 'Step Up'

Pink didn’t agree with Recording Academy president Neil Portnow‘s comments about the lack of female winners at last night’s ceremony.

The 38-year-old musician took to her Twitter to respond to Neil‘s comments that women “who have the creativity in their hearts and souls” need to “step up.”

“Women in music don’t need to ‘step up’ – women have been stepping since the beginning of time. Stepping up, and also stepping aside,” Pink wrote in a handwritten note.

She added, “Women OWNED music this year. They’ve been KILLING IT. And every year before this. When we celebrate and honor the talent and accomplishments of women, and how much women STEP UP every year, and how much women STEP UP every year, against all odds, we show the next generation of women and girls and boys and men what it means to be equal, and what it looks like to be fair.”

Lorde Seemingly Shades Grammys in New Tweet

Lorde took to Twitter this morning to seemingly send a message to the 2018 Grammys, who reportedly did not invite her to give a solo performance during the annual telecast.

Rumors spread over the weekend that Lorde was the only Album of the Year nominee to not be invited to give a solo performance.

Lorde just tweeted, “IF YOU’RE DEBATING WHETHER OR NOT I CAN MURDER A STAGE… COME SEE IT FOR URSELF 😇”

When asked if it was a mistake to not have Lorde perform, Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich said, “I don’t know if it was a mistake. These shows are a matter of choices. We have a box and it gets full. She had a great album. There’s no way we can really deal with everybody.”

Grammys 2018 Ratings See a Big Drop From 2017's Numbers

The preliminary 2018 Grammys ratings are in – and it looks like viewership is down significantly from last year.

According to Variety, the show currently holds a 5.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 17.6 million viewers. To compare, last year’s show had a 7.8 rating and 26.1 million viewers. This accounts for a decrease in almost 30% in that demo and almost a 33% decrease in total viewership. In addition, the show is apparently down a 16 household rating from the 2017 broadcast as well.

There was plenty of star-power at the show this year – you can see the full list of winners here.
