Video of Brittney Griner Leaving Russia Released After She Was Freed from Prison

A video has been released of Brittney Griner traveling back to the United States after being released from a prison in Russia.

The 32-year-old WNBA star was arrested in Russia back in February 2022 after police found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. In August, she was sentenced to nine years in prison.

Joe Biden‘s administration negotiated Brittney‘s release via a trade for international arms dealer Viktor Bout, who was at one time nicknamed “the Merchant of Death.”

Russian state media has released a video of Brittney being escorted out of prison and another video of her on a plane.

Brittney Griner's Appeal Is Denied By Russian Regional Court

Brittney Griner‘s appeal of her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession was denied by a Russian regional court on Tuesday (October 25).

The 31-year-old WNBA star was sentenced in August after police found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport on February 17.

Brittney was given a nine-year sentence after pleading guilty, arguing that she had been prescribed cannabis for her pain and had inadvertently packed it.

The eight-time All-Star center and two-time Olympic gold medalist filed an appeal while the US State Department declared her to be “wrongfully detained.”

Brittney Griner‘s lawyers are speaking out after she was sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia.

The 31-year-old WNBA player was sentenced on charges of smuggling drugs into the country. She pled guilty to bringing less than one gram of cannabis oil into Russia, but said she had “no intents to break any Russian laws.”

Preisdent Joe Biden is speaking out.

The 79-year-old President of the United States issued a statement moments after Brittney Griner received a sentencing of nine years in prison in Russia.

The 31-year-old WNBA basketball star was convicted and sentenced on Thursday (August 4) of smuggling drugs with criminal intent. She has been officially sentenced to 9 years in prison and a fine of 1 million rubles ($16,280 dollars) by a Russian court.

Back in February, she was stopped at an airport in Russia and charged with trying to smuggle less than 1 gram of cannabis oil in her luggage.

American WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner has been convicted in a Russian court on Thursday (August 4) of smuggling drugs with criminal intent. She has been officially sentenced to 9 years in prison and a fine of 1 million rubles by a Russian court.

If you aren’t familiar with the case, back in February, the 31-year-old athlete was stopped at an airport in Russia and charged with trying to smuggle less than 1 gram of cannabis oil in her luggage.

In court today, Brittney was allowed to speak and gave an emotional speech to the judge, asking for leniency in her sentencing. She faced up to 10 years in a Russian prison. Prosecutors asked for a 9 1/2-year sentence.
