Lupita Nyong'o Says Taylor Swift Helped Her Through a Hard Time

Taylor Swift holds a special place in Lupita Nyong’o‘s heart!

While promoting her new movie Little Monsters at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, the 35-year-old Oscar-winning actress revealed how one of the 29-year-old singer’s helped her get through a difficult time in her career.

“I was going through a hard time professionally, and I was just in a funk,” Lupita said. “I was working abroad, and my best friend came to cheer me up. He played ‘Shake It Off’ on his phone, and we just had a dance party in my bedroom.”

In the film, Lupita plays a kindergarten teacher who needs to protect her students from a zombie apocalypse. Her character then sings “Shake It Off” while playing the ukulele to keep the kids calm.

“It meant a lot to me that this film had that [song],” Lupita added. “And so when I heard that they were having a hard time [getting the rights] I wrote Taylor Swift myself and asked her, and told her that story. And she said yes!”
