Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella (Emma Stone), a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
The film stars Emma Stone as the title character, Emma Thompson as the Baroness, Joel Fry as Jasper, Paul Walter Hauser as Horace and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Anita. The trailer for the Emma Stone-led Disney live-action feature debuted on February 17, and brought in 71 million views in its first 24 hours, Deadline reported Sunday (February 21).
The viewership count beat out the recent trailers for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (61.7M0 and Aladdin (60.8M). However, it did not come close to Lion King‘s 224M debut on Thanksgiving in 2018, nor Mulan‘s teaser trailer (175M) in July of 2019.
“In the Covid 24-hour insane social media breaking news world, the volume of social conversation was enormous for Cruella at 265K mentions surpassing both Aladdin (228K) and Beauty and The Beast (154K),” Deadline noted.

The upcoming Matilda musical movie has found its two leading ladies!
Netflix has announced that Emma Thompson will be taking on the role of Miss Trunchbull while newcomer Alisha Weir will play Matilda in the upcoming movie adaption of the famed Broadway musical, EW reports.
Matilda The Musical will be directed by Matthew Warchus, who helmed the Broadway and the UK’s West End shows. The original story was told in Roald Dahl‘s 1988 book.
“Matilda will be an imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical, Matilda, featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established stars,” Matthew said in a statement. “I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world.”
